Sound Creation by Johannes Welsch. Welsch in his improvisations works with two sound aspects of the gongs, that of dynamic range and the other of frequency spectrum. He has written: "I typically develop soundscapes which come out of and return to silence. While the amplitude increases the gong unfolds its full frequency spectrum, beginning with low frequencies (fundamental) and subsequently developing those beautiful overtones (harmonics).
Johannes Welsch is a German percussionist, recording engineer and producer living in Canada. His professional approach to music production is based on his background as business school academic. He began his career teaching executive programs in Europe before entering the music industry in North America. His album "Sound Creation", an example of his solo performances, features the entire "Sound Creation series of gongs" made by Paiste. Music writer Joseph Burnett notes about the production
COMMUNION: This percussion album consists of all acoustic recordings. Much of the album is formed by the improvisational work of Johannes Welsch, a mysterious artist who has created an unusual set of liner notes to accompany the tracks. The notes tell a fictional - perhaps visualized? - story of a cave-side ceremony that guided Welsch to an inner experience Communion is meant to recreate. The very ambiguity and uncertain origin of this story are part of the intrigue of Communion. As I listened to the album, I began to imagine myself at the opening of the cave.

Canadian producer and drummer Johannes Welsch collected gong improvisations on Sound Creation (Deep Listening, 2012). The pieces are performed on four groups of gongs, each named after one of ancient Greece's four elements (fire, water, earth and air). The results range from the "ambient" quiet of Fire to the terrifying holocaust of Storm, from the metaphysicial suspense of Water (listen carefully to the undercurrent of reverbs) to the glacial monoliths of Earth.
