Grateful Dead is an album by rock band the Grateful Dead. Released in October 1971 on Warner Bros. Records, it is their second live double album. Although published without a title, it is generally known by the names Skull and Roses (due to its iconic cover art) and Skull Fuck (the name the band originally wanted to give to the album, which was rejected by the record company).
There's a 13 minute version of "The Other One" that is a freight train, just blunt force trauma to the head that puts the "Skull & Roses" version to shame (it was recorded December 21, 1969, at the Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco). None of the performances on "Skull & Roses" constitute definitive VERSIONS, but it is an album that defines the career of the Dead and it is a classic in 2011, the Dead released the massive 22-concert box set of the complete Europe 72 tour

SKULL & ROSES is not without its meander-the side-long "The Other One" build's a trippy Weir story atop one of Bill Kreutzmann's more inspired percussion workouts. Late in the song, though, one experiences the full inspired telepathy of the band's interplay, with Garcia, Phil Lesh and Kreutzmann conversing in code, and making some sweet music in the process. SKULL & ROSES is a great example of the Grateful Dead in full early flower, inserting themselves into the fabric of American music without sacrificing any of their best assets or eccentricities
