Chopin's cello sonata, Op. 65, was his last major work. Apart from the piano, the cello was the only instrument for which Chopin composed substantial amounts of music; in 1832 he had written the Grand Duo Concertant for the cellist Auguste Franchomme. In part because of the presence of the cello, and in greater part because of the formal characteristics of the piece, the composition of the cello sonata occupied Chopin for an unusually long period. He worked on it through 1845 and well into 1846, sketching and drafting as he had not done before, and at one point complaining to his sister,.
Sergei Rachmaninoff's Sonata in G minor for Cello and Piano, Op. 19 was completed in November 1901 and published a year later. Rachmaninoff regarded the role of the piano as not just an accompaniment but equal to the cello. Most of the themes are introduced by the piano, while they are embellished and expanded in the cello's part. Rachmaninoff dedicated the work to Anatoliy Brandukov, who gave the first performance in Moscow with the composer at the piano, on 2 December 1901
The Sonata is in three movements - Allegro con brio, Andante ma non troppo, and Finale: Allegro vivo - and showcases both Strauss' lyrical melodic writing for cello and his considerable understanding of the piano. Many of the formal difficulties evident in Strauss' earlier efforts, such as excessive repetition, are resolved in this piece as variation reveals itself as a burgeoning and important aspect of his compositional style. The first movement, in sonata form, features a multiplicity of themes in a kind of dialogue
