Craig Handy's 2014 album, Craig Handy & 2nd Line Smith, finds the adept jazz saxophonist exploring a dance-amenable mix of material that combines the organ jazz sound of Jimmy Smith with the roiling New Orleans rhythmic traditions of second-line brass band music. Although Handy has played with such jazz luminaries as Wynton Marsalis and Elvin Jones, and was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, he never had the opportunity to play with Smith.

That all changed with the January release of Craig Handy & 2nd Line Smith, on which the leader digs deep into a mix of groovy organ jazz and NOLA parade-band strut for a downright funky good time. Expect similar fun here. Posted: Friday January 3 2014.
