Both bear witness to an exceptional understanding of the clarinet’s distinctive character. Brahms, Johannes (1833-97). Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus (1756-91). Brahms: Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op.

Mozart and Brahms Clarinet Quintets Notes by Andrea Lamoreaux. Anton Paul Stadler (1753–1812) and his brother Johann were both clarinetists with the Vienna Music Society in the 1770s, and were also employed as musicians in the household of Count Dmitry Golitsin, Russian ambassador to the Viennese imperial court. In the early 1780s, Emperor Joseph II organized his own wind band - oboes, clarinets, bassoons, and horns - and the Stadlers became part of this group, known in 18th-century Germany and Austria as a Harmonie

Sometimes it is hard to remain focused on Brahms chamber music, but the Sequoia and Zukovsky playing with remarkable balance and integration have no problems keeping me "into it". The third movement, in particular, is exceptionally well performed. The sound quality is very good.

The origination of Mozart's extensive Clarinet Quintet in A major (1789), as well as that of Brahms's opus some hundred years later (1891), was primarily inspired by the mastery of a virtuoso clarinettist. In the case of Mozart, it concerned the famous Anton Stadler, to whom the composer also dedicated other solo compositions for clarinet. The piece's 1789 premiere in Vienna was concurrently the premiere of the basset clarinet, in whose construction Stadler himself participated.
