Following the release of Madonna's book Sex, the album didn't gain much success, although it have been praised by the critics, who consider it one of Madonna's most underrated albums. The album spawned six singles: "Erotica", "Deeper and Deeper", "Bad Girl", "Fever", "Rain", "Bye Bye Baby". Erotica sold 7 million copies worldwide.

Madonna recorded the album in New York City with Shep Pettibone and André Betts while she was working on her book and film projects. She began creating the album's demos with Pettibone in his apartment in October 1991, and wrote the melodies and lyrics on top of the basic music which Pettibone produced in the style of his remixes.

While it didn't set the charts on fire like her previous albums, the ambitious Erotica contains some of Madonna's best and most accomplished music (including the hit singles "Deeper and Deeper" and "Rain"), even if it runs a bit long.

After coming hot off the trail of her Iconic and most Personal Like A Prayer, controversial Blonde Ambition Tour, Madonna decided to push the envelope more further with Justify My Love and the controversial Erotica album. This album picks up where Like A Prayer left off such as Heartache, Romance, Loss, and of course sex. Lead single Erotica generated a lot of controversies due to the sexual lyrics and the accompany video, which were banned from MTV, but aired after midnight. Despite this, its a pretty decent album with the melancholy songs Bad Girl, Rain, Words and In This Life, which the song was about two of her close friends passed away from AIDS. Overall songs like Bye Bye Baby, Waiting, and Words were written to actor Warren Beatty, whom she dated in 1990 and married actress Annette Benning, whom Madonna bashed in the song Thief Of Hearts with the lines "Here She Comes Acts Like She's Your Best Friend When You Turn Your Back and She's Up With Your Guy" Overall this a great album but can be considered the sequel to 1989's Like A Prayer.
Tavan28 12/18/18I love this album! Erotica is Madonna's most sexual album! The songs are raunchy and provocative!
This album screams desesperately ¡Sexual freedom! At that time this was a huge bomb. This album is about beeing comfortable with yourself and your sexuality. In my opinion, one of the greatest madonna albums ever.
