Giving & Receiving is the band's third full-length for K Records, on which they continue to innocuously fidget with their miniatures. LAKE's music is aimless, but pleasantly so. For all of the time spent on the arrangements, there doesn't appear to be a guiding principle; not to perfect cuddly songcraft, not to scheme the least threatening electric guitar sound ever recorded, not to be Sufjan Stevens. Flaws and inconsistencies are what drew me to LAKE's previous record, Let's Build a Roof, which, despite being a twee-inflected album about domesticity that featured.
While recording their third album, Giving & Receiving, the Olympia, WA band LAKE had a bit of a problem. The analog tape they were recording on began to disintegrate, threatening the project and forcing a switch to digital recording. Since part of the reason for recording on tape is the desire to capture a feeling of warmth, the group feared the loss of that intangible quality after the switch-over. They shouldn’t have worried, because the record is just as warm, rich, and layered with soft soul as their previous efforts. The way the voices mix together, the blend of old keyboards, gently.

Lake's 2011 full-length album, Giving and Receiving soars with beautiful melodies and gentle, yet deliberate instrumentation. Written partially while staying at a little cabin in Northern Sweden, which band member Ashley Eriksson says is the only place she's ever truly heard silence, songs like "Skeleton Costume," and "Pilgrim's Day" were born in a shed there, and have the creaky barn wood/fresh air sound to prove it.
