Oftentimes the newer version draws out the original’s complexities in a way you never would have noticed before. Or maybe the first version is equally compelling, but the cover artist reimagined it with such grandeur that many don’t even realize that it’s a new take on an old song. Found on the band’s 1970 album Loaded, the Velvet Underground original is a stately ballad, influenced by Lou Reed ’s adoration of ‘50s doo-wop and dreamy Phil Spector productions, complete with a spoken word lament/plea to a lover. Chan Marshall’s version, by contrast, is of a piece with most of the material she recorded for her 2000 Covers Record.

Here are the 50 best cover songs that are far better than the original. Well, get this: none of them are original works; they’re just extreme versions of the best cover songs of all time. Yes, when it comes to music, first is not always best. Often, the original rendition is merely the first draft, a starting-gun inspiration for other singers and songwriters to take a good song and make it great. Herein, you’ll find 50 such examples of the world’s best cover songs. So listen on, and see how many you knew were cover songs. Who hasn’t delighted to this power-pop ditty? As of this writing, more than 30 artists have covered this iconic number, but none come close to Lauper’s take, which exploded on radio and MTV in 1983. The song, first performed by a little-known Robert Hazard in ’79, but it took maverick thinker Cyndi Lauper to do it justice.

Either way, cover versions occasionally turn out to be more popular than and/or artistically superior to the originals. It's not common, but the following are 10 songs that, despite great original versions, work better as covers. Maybe it's wrong to say the Chili Peppers did a better job performing 'Higher Ground' than the living legend who wrote it. But often times, these sorts of preferences are determined by which version one hears first, and being Gen-Xers, we happened upon Anthony Kiedis & c. s 'Mother's Milk' rendition well before the original. In fact, it wasn't until many years later that we discovered Stevie Wonder's take, which is slightly slower but no less funky.
