While the companion volume to this disc, Singing the Bruise: BBC Sessions 1970-1972 features versions of Ayers' material that is wildly different from his original albums, First Show in the Appearance Business for the most part stays true to the original album's arrangements. That's not to say that it isn't a wonderful listen. Some of Ayers' albums from this period, notably Yes We Have No Mañanas and The Confessions of Dr. Dream are slightly overproduced, whereas the First Show has a certain indescribable down to earth ambience that makes this material shine.
