And Mega Breakfast is the Chap's superbly quirky coming-out party, as they've signed to Ghostly International for their first proper release in the States. Their beats, still emaciated and tinny, are beginning to sound less like they're trying to take the piss out of dance music and more like they've given the disco a much-needed tummy-tuck.
On "Proper Rock," one of Mega Breakfast's many deeply cheeky moments, the Chap sing about "proper songs about girls and clubbing," but that's the closest they come to such straightforward subject matter. Surgery, cloning, and world music are much more interesting song topics in the Chap's world, and more fitting for their "pop improv disco rock with strings" anyway. Their sound has gotten sleeker, slicker, and brighter with each album, and Mega Breakfast is some of their most electronic - and danceable - music
The Chap unabashedly mocks its audience with its lyrics, which seem specifically designed to have you making a fool out of yourself at a bus stop or a coffee counter not through any fault of your own but because you can’t stop from singing the trite affirmations out loud, Come on, come on, Cloners, clone another me! or Come into my bathroom. showroom/Approach me slowly, visit my body. The Chap has dutifully sucked down the myopic, club-centric culture and now spits it back at us with extra doses of sugar. But being pandered to, or made fun of, rarely feels this good. Unfortunately, the English singer-songwriter’s fourth album, N. Collaborations Project, which is composed of 15 tracks which all feature at least one guest artist, has way too many of the second kind of song. A few of these collaborations succeed thanks to their limited ambitions.
Third album from The Chap, the already legendary, pan European, London based, modern pop group. The Chap have become known and loved for their inimitable k sound and a furiously rocking live show, complete with dance routines and scary faces. Mega Breakfast features some of their most brilliant songs. Crisp, correct and essential.
