A former Choral Scholar at King's College, he founded Corydon Singers when he was only sixteen and has been its Musical Director ever since. Between 1980 and 1986 he was a principal bass with the Royal Opera. In 1991 he founded Corydon Orchestra.

Matthew Best founded Corydon Singers in 1973 which achieved recognition as one of the foremost choirs in Britain. Matthew Best's 1990 recording with Corydon Singers of Ralph Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music and other works was selected as Record of the Year by both the Guardian Newspaper and The Sunday Times, and was nominated for the Brit Awards.
