On Bones’s latest album, A Fool for Everyone, his diversions into songwriting cover the indie rock territory of the early '90s, the vocal qualities of Robyn Hitchcock and Stephen Malkmus, and the amplified guitar sounds of Americana. Sometimes Bones hits it brilliantly, and other times fall short of the outcome he had intended. Today the World Is Worthy of My Loathing, the album's lead-off track, defines all the beauty and error that A Fool for Everyone is capable of producing. The pinnacle of the songwriting lies within the album’s title track, A Fool for Everyone, where he claims Like a monkey grinds his cage, Like a woman mourns her age, I made a deal with every pleasure left below the sun. The song is written about how each and every human desires to live a little, and how vulnerable we are to those life experiences.

Bones' role as the accuser, sputtering anger at everyone around him, is wonderfully assumed here, and makes A Fool for Everyone an enjoyable glimpse at the life of an unloved rogue. 60. Overestimate it for the wrong reasons, and you’ll still get a lot out of A Fool for Everyone; underestimate it for the right reasons and you won’t have to look too hard for a replacement. A Fool For Everyone proves Bones can write a song or two.

Album: A Fool for Everyone. Label: The Social Registry. Nearly everything about Mike Bones’ approach to songwriting is underwritten by Leonard Cohen’s career. First attempts to get into his second solo effort, A Fool for Everyone, might be enough to have you reaching for your copy of Songs from a Room. If you stick it out, though, you should find that Bones, né Strallow, isn’t musically derivative as much as he’s in thrall to Cohen’s rangy persona

When Mike Bones sagely sings Today the world is worthy of my loathing, it’s kind of hard not to agree. The 29-year-old musician delivers the lines with convincing grit, sounding like a road-weary, lovelorn singer. Judging from his music-plus the fact that he lists beautiful women and existential despair as his main influences-it’s reasonable to assume that Bones is a miserable guy. Turns out he isn’t. People have weird ideas about me, he says. I mean, everyone thinks I’m gonna be a dick or some depressive mope because of my music. I kind of enjoy playing that role though. It wasn’t until the release of his sophomore album, A Fool For Everyone (The Social Registry), earlier this year, that the tide seemed to have turned in his favor. I just make records and then never think that anyone in the world hears them, he says. But being on tour this year, I met people who actually relate to my music.
