Waking the Fury finds Annihilator giving up not only to the Industrial Rock fixations Waters had with Ministry on Human Remains, but also to a whole chunk of the Alternative/Nu Metal fodder of the 00’s, as songs like “Prime Time Killing” reveal the Hip-Hop cadences the band had taken (“Cold Blooded” even features scratching). Paradoxically, it didn’t enrage their fanbase, but maybe because they hadn’t a contract with Roadrunner Records or Nuclear Blast (though Steamhammer wasn’t far off the other twos regarding their goals). The Black Metal-like fuzz of the guitars’ sound does little to alter the band’s formula, which, by this time, had become predictable to say the least. Although there are a pair moments worth moshing (“My Precious Lunatic Asylum”), the album is mostly cold and ineffective, as the band wasn’t really sure what to do this time. Well… something's better than nothing.Highlights: “Ultra-Motion”, “My Precious Lunatic Asylum”, “Fire Power”.
