Actually, the instrumentals feature a scaled-down group with trumpeter Roy Eldridge and violinist Stuff Smith joined by the Oscar Peterson Quartet (which includes guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Jo Jones); the best is Smith's showcase on "Bugle Call Ra. Otherwise this is strictly an Ella Fitzgerald date and, although she is in fine form on nine numbers, nothing too surprising occurs.
