James Graham Ballard (15 November 1930 – 19 April 2009) was an English novelist, short story writer, and essayist who first became associated with the New Wave of science fiction for his post-apocalyptic novels such as The Wind from Nowhere (1961) and The Drowned World (1962). In the late 1960s, he produced a variety of experimental short stories (or "condensed novels"), such as those collected in the controversial The Atrocity Exhibition (1970).
Hank Ballard and the Midnighters, who were previously 'The Royals,’ had a number of recordings that were prohibited from airplay but sold hundreds of thousands of records. Work With Me Annie,’ 'Annie Had a Baby,’ 'Sex Ways,’ 'Annie’s Aunt Fannie’ and 'There’s a Thrill Up on The Hill’ were all best sellers from juke boxes, with very little radio exposure. Chubby Checker might have made it popular, but Hank Ballard was the creator. His sound is one of the most unique in old Soul musi. f you hear a Hank Ballard tune, you immediately know who it is. His larger than life voice sang on so many hit songs it will make your head spin. It has the same rhythm, melody and changes as many of his tunes, but something about his vocal delivery on this recording makes it one of his best performances.
Hank Ballard is remembered for recording a trilogy of risqué R&B numbers: Work with Me, Annie, Annie Had a Baby and Annie’s Aunt Fannie. Yet Ballard’s contribution to rock and roll goes much deeper than that. With the grinding guitars, distorted sound and fervid call-and-response of those and many other recordings made for the King and Federal labels, Ballard helped define the sound of rock and roll. Hank Ballard was born in Detroit on November 18, 1927 (some sources list 1936)
