Universal High (CDr, Album, Promo). Childhood (3). Universal High (CD, Album).
The second album from British indie rockers Childhood has a striking sound influenced by classic 1970s soul and funk. Their unorthodox sound carries a revitalising attentiveness on Universal High, bringing a fragment of old-time sounds to the modern era. Containing an amalgamation of curious instruments and satisfying vocals, ‘Universal High’ implements a variety of musical melody’s, yet still manages to carry off that simplistic vibe which adds to its effectiveness. Rather than sounding too busy, the songs are smartly arranged to maintain an almost stripped back feeling which aids in captivating those who listen
Universal High continues Childhood’s musical path, the guitar pedals are dialled down, the groove is ramped up, but the care in the songwriting remains wonderfully intact. It’s a natural-sounding progression that confounds the expected developments ‘a guitar band’ should make and instead adds a glorious musical technicolour to a set of songs to soundtrack the summer and beyond. Snotty Nose Rez Kids are at the forefront of Canada’s indigenous renaissance.
On sophomore album, Universal High, the shoegaze stylings remain, but they’re buoyed by explorations of classic soul and R&B. Frontman Ben Romans-Hopcraft lifts the droning whispers of Lacuna into a falsetto vocal reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield. In a lot of ways, Childhood has grown up, moving out of dirty basements and into sleek ‘70s clubs.
