Il Bellerofonte is an 18th-century Italian opera in three acts by the Czech composer Josef Mysliveček. It conforms to the serious type (opera seria) that was typically set in the distant past. The libretto, based on the Greek legend of Bellerophon, was written by Giuseppe Bonecchi. The work was dedicated to King Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies and was first performed at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples on 20 January 1767, the birthday of his father, King Charles III of Spain

Josef Myslivecek is slimly represented in The Classical Catalogue, and this is, I think, the first of his operas to be recorded. One of Mozart's most admired Bohemian contemporaries, a skilled symphonist and the composer of a good deal of enjoyable chamber music, he had his first opera, Il Parnasso confuso, performed in Parma in 1765, when he was 28. The Italians, in difficulties with pronouncing his name, translated it as Giovanni Venatorini: we might have called him Joseph Hunter. Myslivecek Il Bellerofonte. View record and artist details. Freeman (2009) to b. ne of the most talented composers active in the autumn years of the eighteenth century in Europe. rilliant, successful and inventive. Mysliveček spent his childhood in the Prague mills in Kampa and at the Old Town footbridge near Charles Bridge. Giuseppe Bustelli, director of the Kotzen Theatre, had his Bellerofonte performed during the carnaval season (1767-68) and began more systematic production of his successful Italian operas in Prague (Semiramide riconosciuta and Il Farnace in 1768).
