Le Martyre de Saint Sebastian' was a tremendous flop, has not been staged since and is only heard in various fragmentary forms which reveal some of Debussy's more interesting and forward-looking music. This disc contains an oratorio treatment with translation by Leonard Bernstein himself and the spoken part of the Saint taken by Bernstein's wife, Felicia Montelegre.

Came with the February 2012 issue of BBC Music Magazine. Recorded live at BBC Hoddinott Hall, Cardiff Bay on 15 October 2011.

Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian - Debussy. Audio CD. 8 offers from £. 5. Debussy: Le martyre de Saint Sébastien, Khamma. Debussy created a masterpiece for the ages. Bernstein brings it to life for the English speaking audience. Music heard rarely, Bernstein sweeps away the cobwebs of history, tearing open the curtains to reveal music worthy of the subject. The orchestral sound is rich, intimate, warm and thrilling. The narrator, Fritz Weaver, draws the listener into the presence of Sebastian as he undergoes torture and martyrdom for his God. One can almost see the actions of the hero, the villainous Emperor. The track of Sebastian's arrow as it flies into the sky, ever higher until it disappears.

The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian is a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci showing the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. It was rediscovered in Paris in March 2016, classed as a "trésor national" and presented to the press on 10 January 2017.

Passionate and moving. Excellent sound, Typical Bernstein show stopper. the NY Philharmonic is at it's best. Tonality and balance are presented in an extraordinary performance of this orchestral jewel. Mrs. Bernstein takes the part of Sebastian and transforms her voice into that of the Martyr, leading the listener through the 7 windows.Debussy's music is thrilling and enchanting, the work of a master in melody and orchestration. The sound is intimate as if you're present for a private showing of this tragic scene. Shakespearean at times, loving, fresh and insightful.
