Bunky Green, director of the Jazz Studies program at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, is very much alive, we are happy to report, and the members of the school’s Jazz Ensemble 1 thought it would be a good idea to honor his life and achievements while he’s still around to appreciate the gesture. It was good idea in practice as well as theory, as the ensemble’s spectacular album, Through His Eyes: For Bunky Green, quickly affirms. accomplished big-band drummers at that level I’ve heard. Davis, pianist Tom McEvoy, guitarist Steve Lesche and bassist Stan Piper keep the rhythm bright and percolating while the brass and reeds make every melody memorable, none more so than alto saxophonist Nasilio Taveras’ picturesque and high-spirited homage to Green, Through His Eyes, a wonderful way to open any album.

Kenny Burrell recorded this fabulous album for Verve when jazz was having a lean time. At the album’s heart is the suite, written by Burrell which is outstanding, beautifully crafted music that deserves to be more widely heard. Asphalt Canyon Blues’ is a brilliant showcase for one of the great jazz guitarists, who as a sideman or soloist, has never short changed. Recorded at the Baked Potato in North Hollywood, California. It includes two great Miles Davis covers, ‘So What’ and ‘All Blues’ along with four Carlton originals. It is easy to hear why Carlton is so well respected and in our view should be way more listened to, he is constantly inventive and always spot on. Lyle Mays – Street Dreams (1988). Best known as longtime Pat Metheny Group member, keyboard player, Mays, brings so much invention and sheer class to this album of modern jazz.
