Family features some of Le Loup's most pop-oriented work to date, especially on a track like "Beach Town" - a haunting, gritty deconstruction of a surf song. This isn't to say that Le Loup have compromised their tendency to experiment on this album - far from it. Like The Throne, Family is rich with bells and whistles - there's a lot of textured looping, overdubbed vocals, distortion, and reverb. The main difference here is in Family's generous array of organic instruments, particularly in the form of hand drums, tambourines, bells, handclaps, and rattles.
While both Le Loup’s debut and the new album Family, released on September 22, are strong and original, they are also quite different. The new album, the first with the full band, uses organic instruments and one can immediately notice the fuller sound. The most noticeable change in the songs on Family is joy (as Simkoff discusses below) – something that was largely missing from the debut album. With titles like Morning Song, Golden Bell, and A Celebration, it’s immediately apparent that Family is a brighter album. Beach Town, the song that was released early to build anticipation for.

Real people, while looking through a family album, remember the good times and gloss over, or forget, the bad times. These characters not only refused to forget the mostly imagined bad times, they wallowed in them. If I had been the mother character, Alison, and raised such tiresome, ungrateful brats as her adult children turned out to be, I would have shipped them off to boarding school and moved to India to join an ashram or something.
Family Album manages to intrigue and delight, and to keep the reader captivated, racing along without obvious direction but with a very tight sense of purpose. The narrative is distanced to an extreme degree: we are reading an anthropological study of the English middle classes from the 1970s to the present, their traditions and tribal habits causing winces of delighted, uncomfortable recognition.
