Along with Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan stands out as a musician whose work caused America and the West to pay attention to Indian classical in the 1960s. This disc combines two albums from 1965: Traditional Music of India and The Soul of Indian Music, both originally on Prestige. The re-release offers Michael Gold's informative and occasionally hilarious original liner notes as well. Akbar Khan plays the sarod, which is similar to the sitar but with a resonating body at both ends of the strings, and fewer sympathetic strings
Album · 1995 · 4 Songs. Plucking at the strings of his sarod with hypnotic finesse and elegance, Ali Akbar Khan plays in a manner that lulls us into a state of trance-like ecstasy. The way he bends his notes on the mesmerizing "Raga Chandranandan" transports us to another plane of thought, and his resonant drone on "Raga Ramdas Malhar" soothes like a gentle lullaby. Meanwhile, the percussive momentum of "Raga Malika" is sensuous in its sinewy but driving momentum. Traditional Music of India Ali Akbar Khan.
Ali Akbar Khan (14 April 1922 – 18 June 2009) was a Hindustani classical musician of the Maihar gharana, known for his virtuosity in playing the sarod. Trained as a classical musician and instrumentalist by his father, Allauddin Khan, he also composed numerous classical ragas and film scores.
Ali Akbar Khan is one of the most decorated Indian classical musicians of the twentieth century - and deservedly so. Son of sarod master Allaudin, Khan began studying music at the tender age of three. Decades later he's won five Grammys, won a MacArthur genius grant, and established music schools around the globe. His playing ain't so bad, either. What else can we say? The man's a legend - give him a listen.
