Producer Bill Randle didn't get a lot of the songs he'd hoped to record, such as "Stack O Lee" and "Night Time Is the Right Time," which Broonzy didn't want to sing, but he got enough for five LPs' worth of music out of the ten hours of recordings. Recorded shortly before his death, this box set captures a candid Big Bill reminiscing about the friends and family who shaped his musical style and his career, both in conversation and in music. Over the course of 5 LP's (or 3 CD's), the versatile guitarist and singer (and charming storyteller) plays the spirituals he heard as a child, the folk tunes he learned from his uncle, and the songs written by friends who had preceded him to the grave, and a few of his own compositions. Despite its length, and his occasionally rambling memories, the experience entertains and fascinates from start to finish.
