Symposium SYMPCD1205.

Beginning with words by a famous poet such as Goethe, Wolf would study the text arduously until he felt he understood its deepest meanings, which he would then reflect with complex chords and melodies that pushed the boundaries of dissonance. Franz Liszt, Franz Schubert, Richard Wagner.

CD 1. Hugo Wolf Composer. Mörike Lieder, for voice and piano Work. Heinrich Schlusnus Baritone, Franz Rupp Piano. Italienisches Liederbuch (Italian Songbook) Work.

Profile: String quartet classical ensemble, founded 1993 in Vienna. Franz Mittler, Hugo Wolf Quartett - String Quartets 1 & 3 ‎(CD, Album).

My first experience of Hugo Wolf was as a child, hearing Verschwiegene Liebe (Silent Love) on Barbra Streisand's Classical Barbra album (much praised by both Leonard Bernstein and Glenn Gould). I remembered the song years later, and it drew me back to Wolf. In essence, the story ought to be one of boundaries broken down, of how vocal traditions can circulate and cross-fertilise

Hugo Philipp Jacob Wolf (13 March 1860 – 22 February 1903) was an Austrian composer of Slovene origin, particularly noted for his art songs, or Lieder. He brought to this form a concentrated expressive intensity which was unique in late Romantic music, somewhat related to that of the Second Viennese School in concision but diverging greatly in technique.
