El Salon Mexico - New York Phil/Leonard Bernstein. 3. Billy The Kid: Celebration - LSO/Aaron Copland. 4. Rodoe: Hoe Down - LSO/Aaron Copland. 5. Appalachian Spring - New York Phil/Leonard Bernstein. This is a wonderful album of compositions by one of America's best composers directed by another of America's best composers and conductors. A true melding of two of the best America has to offer. BILLY THE KID was recorded in 1959, RODEO in 1960 and APPALACHIAN SPRING in 1961, all in the early years of Bernstein's directorship of the New York Philharmonic (1958-1969). Even though these are analog recordings, and may be superceded from a technical standpoint by more recent digital recordings, these are in my opinion among the best, if not THE best.
Lenny is fully in his element here, and IMO these performances, recorded in 1959-61, have never been equalled for spontaneity, spunk, and rhythmic snap, even bettering the composer's own recordings (also on SACD). I compared the sound of this new MCH SACD (in stereo) to the SBM'd CD in Sony's 'Bernstein Century' series, and the SACD beats it handily
Copland wrote El Salón México between 1932 and 1936, which met with a popular acclaim that contrasted the relative obscurity of most of his previous works. Inspiration for this work came from Copland's vivid recollection of visiting the "Salon Mexico" dancehall where he witnessed a more intimate view of Mexico's nightlife. Copland derived his melodic material for this piece. freely from two collections of Mexican folk tunes, changing pitches and varying rhythms
