Everything, from far enough away, is beautiful and nothing hurt. While it seems like it’s Vonnegut breaking the fourth wall for the sake of ironic humor, let’s not forget that Billy Pilgrim was an unpretentious Everyman, and not the sort to ever be snarky. He actually meant what he said, although that perspective was aided by his chronological un-tethering. I love Vonnegut’s capacity for irony. Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt is a great example. Billy Pilgrim thinks, but does not say this line when his daughter is asking him about his experiences during WWII. Of course, Billy, the protagonist in Slaughterhouse-Five had a horrible experience, held in a POW camp run by the Nazis in Dresden, Germany which, as Vonnegut, puts it, was blown to smithereens by Allied forces. So, for Billy, nothing was beautiful and everything hurt. k views · View 2 Upvoters · Answer requested by.
