American soprano Kathleen Battle (born 1948) divided her career between the opera and concert singing. Her light, sweet voice and charming stage presence were especially suited to operatic ingénue roles. Lyric coloratura soprano Kathleen Battle was born on August 13, 1948, in Portsmouth, Ohio. The youngest of seven children whose father was a steel worker, she attended public schools in a segregated school system. In 2002 she released Classic Kathleen Battle: A Portrait. The album contains four previously unreleased selections including her rendering of Puccini's "Omio bibbino Caro" and Duke Ellington's "Prelude to a Kiss.
The overtones of suffering and joy are made beautifully evident by these two great artists in what was clearly a magical evening. Listen out for the duet There Is Balm In Gilead, a hugely moving performance.
Kathleen Battle initially made her considerable reputation on the operatic stage, but quickly went on to become a premier recitalist and a vibrant interpreter of a wide variety of musical styles.

However, the concert started 35 minutes late, which was disappointing as I have never been to a concert which started more than 10 minutes late, except when it’s due to inclement weather or traffic accidents. Ms. Battle’s singing was wonderful and so was the choir. However, I would have enjoyed the concert more if she sung some of her sigature solo pieces from her albums. In any event, it was wonderful seeing Ms. Battle perform live and it was a treat! 25. By athas17.
