Profile: English composer. Born 10 October 1954 in Liverpool, died 6 May 2013 in London. He curated the Factory Classical label of Factory Records, featuring contemporary British composers. Martland studied composition at Liverpool University and in the Netherlands with Louis Andriessen. He worked almost exclusively with artists outside classical institutions - Dutch and American groups, freelance musicians and especially his own Steve Martland Band, which tours his music internationally.
Steve Martland's Horses of Instruction pulls together the majority of works that the composer has written for his own band. The title track is one of the strongest written for the ensemble, most expertly exhibiting Martland's unique compositional voice that wholly defies categorisation. Steve Martland's first album under wide release has captured the raw energy that the band produces from his music.
