The symphonies of Louis Spohr have long suffered from neglect, and their assimilation into the modern repertoire has only been gradual, with occasional performances and recordings that appeal most to connoisseurs of German symphonic music, but are never really absorbed into the mainstream.

Howard Griffiths and the NDR Radio Philharmonic continue on their exploration of Louis Spohr’s symphonic works, with Symphonies Nos. 2 and 8. The widespread interest in Louis Spohr is growing and CPO’s series of the symphonic works aim to bring to light one of the most popular German composers in England from the nineteenth century. Spohr wrote nine symphonies leaving the tenth unfinished. The later symphonies move from the classical style that he had inherited to music with a programmatic element. They remain relative rarities in the concert-hall today

These symphonies of Spohr are unlike both the Beethoven symphonies & those contemporary symphonies of Schuman, Mendelssohn, etc, Spohr's works reflect both Mozart & early romanticism, but without the in your face, raw, grand sweeping emotions to be found elsewhere.

Even though Louis Spohr lived well into the Romantic era, and was a contemporary of such cutting-edge figures as Beethoven, Berlioz, Paganini, Liszt, and Wagner, his music stayed remarkably Classical in form and substance, and sounded conservative in style, even late in his career. This 2007 Hyperion release presents Spohr's first two symphonies with the Sturm und Drang-styled Grand Concert Overture in F major, WoO 1 (1819), making this a fairly balanced program, if not a convincing introduction to the composer's music. The performances by Howard Shelley and the Swiss-Italian Radio Orchestra are vivacious and sharply executed, and Hyperion's recording is rich and warm.
