Tavan26 9/9/16I love this album Mud On The Tires shows Brad growing and maturing as an artist! The songs are fun and enjoyable!
I'm repeating myself a lot from my prior Brad reviews but what can I say, Brad has a pattern. Take country music, add some pop sensibility to it, put in some great guitar work and humour. You got a Paisley album. It works well but it never reaches beyond the threshold of 'good'. It's a very weak 4.5 or a strong 4 depending on my mood.So there's the singles. "Mud on the Tires" has great guitar work and deserves its spot as a single, one of the better songs here. "Little Moments" is a lot worse than I remember it being, I think it's because I read a review once that accused it of basically saying "Oh those silly stupid women, how I love them." And I can't unread that, but it's still an okay song if you don't give it much thought. The other two singles are the best, "Celebrity" is actually really funny, a parody of the perks of being a celebrity "I'd get to cry to Barbara Walters. When things don't go my way. And I get community service, no matter which laws I break." It's recommended you listen to it with the video. On the other side of the spectrum you get the classic "Whiskey Lullaby" which is a stunning ballad about a couple who drink themselves to death after the woman cheats on the man (spoilers). It's a rare addition to Brads catalog thanks to its extremely dark tone, but it works wonders, with huge kudos being given to Allison Krauss for taking the second verse. This is probably the best batch of non-singles Brad had put on an album to date. I enjoy the laid back simplicity of "Ain't Nothin' Like" although I don't enjoy the kids singing the chorus. "The Cigar Song" has such a unique and silly story that is a joy. "Make a Mistake" is kind of like an acoustic track except that it's Brad showcasing his skill on the electric guitar, it makes it stand apart from songs of similar ilk and it works wonderfully, though the instrumental runs long. "Somebody Knows You Now" has this nice Caribbean laid back kind of vibe to it, and is the best use of the B3 organ on the album. It's a Paisley album, but seeing Mud on the Tires gathered some good songs not destined for the radio, I'd say it's his best album other than possibly This is Country Music.
