In the third volume, recorded on March 22 and 27, 1940, Guthrie, having described his own life on the first disc and celebrated the lives of such heroes as Pretty Boy Floyd on the second, zeroes in on his main concern, the Dust Bowl of the 1930s and the dispossessed Okies induced to go from bad to worse as they migrated to.

A three-record set was issued by Elektra Records. The set contains 29 tracks and features Guthrie talking frankly about race relations, his childhood experiences in Oklahoma, remembrances of gangsters and outlaws like Pretty Boy Floyd and Jesse James, and things he had observed riding the rails, during dust storms and in the oil fields. Guthrie performed folk songs and old tunes he'd heard and learned in his travels, singing them in the undiluted, expressive, moving manner that characterized his records.
