Over the course of three albums, Danish project Make a Change… Kill Yourself have proven to be a consistent “Depressive Black Metal” act… until the release of Fri. Their third album, released almost 6 years after their last one, consists of four tracks bringing up to 52 minutes, something that isn’t exaggerated: however, this time the lyrics are in Danish, so one needs to translate them (and even after he has done it, they don’t prove to be revelatory). Instead, the problem is another. The problem on Fri is that this time Make a Change… Kill Yourself have decided to scale back their ambitions and go even more quietly than usual. The resulting songs, in other words, wouldn’t have absolutely sounded out of place in the hands of much more inoffensive bands like Wodensthrone, Winterfylleth, Agalloch or even Empyrium: they’re all Melancholic Rock pieces in A/E minor that don’t attempt to go anywhere, and feature only dramatically temporary chord variations (see the first part of “Livets Gave”), as they go along for their long duration without dramatic changes. The worst aspect happened: on the whole album, there isn’t trace of the stunning and disturbed chromatic semitone-basses tricks that gave their previous two albums so much personality: what’s here is a run-of-the-mill album that’s put to compete with contemporary releases of Benighted in Sodom, Shining and Happy Days, a (underground) mass-market on which this album can’t absolutely compete due to its staleness.Granted, staleness has always been a major characteristic for album like this to help the listener raise his intuition and the perception of how much can a work be derivative and intensely personal at the same time (there’s a reason why Burzum has become such a sensation to almost everyone), but this album is dramatically formulaic and poor on interesting ideas, and there’s still some people who would compare it with Katatonia’s Dance of December Souls. It’s a listenable album, but nothing more, and from Make a Change… Kill Yourself, we definitely except the more.Highlights: “Livets Gave“.
