Sleepmakeswaves, a young quartet from the Land Down Under, impressed many listeners with their 2008 release In Today Already Walks Tomorrow. though there was something missing that was stopping them from reaching their true potential. It was almost like they hadn't quite defined their own sound yet. Enter. and so we destroyed everything. By utilizing textured electronics to complement massive, rolling soundscapes, Sleepmakeswaves have managed to break away from the pack and produce a very solid sophomore release. The most major difference from the debut album is the production.

Only for completionists (4%). SLEEPMAKESWAVES are a Post-Rock band out of Australia and this is their first full length album released in 2011. A four piece of two guitarists, a bass player/programmer and drummer. We do get some guest trumpet on one track and violin on another. This is melodic and clear sounding and it's a little different than some Post-Rock with the way the outbursts come suddenly instead of slowly building. I'm not into a lot of the programmed sounds though, especially the percussion that sounds like a drum machine.

Australian post-rock quartet sleepmakeswaves (the band prefers lower case for their name and songs) is an instrumental group to notice. The foursome’s 2011 first full-length …and so we destroyed everything (following an initial EP release) was nominated for an ARIA (the Down Under equivalent of a Grammy). The album became available stateside, via the Monotreme label, with a bonus, nine-track remix record (titled ...and then they remixed everything). A comparison to post-rockers such as Mogwai or Sigur Rós is apt, since sleepmakeswaves uses a typical soft/loud approach, soaring guitar lines, and an expansive, cinematic scope. The difference, though, is tightly structured arrangements which often employ ample melodies, such as digitally curling “our time is short but your watch is slow” and atmospherically-aligned “(hello) cloud mountain.” Throughout, the band embraces acoustic piano, cascading guitars, heavy metal riffs, a string section and electronica effects (which are significantly heightened on the hour-long remix project) to craft shifting, productive dynamics which prove post-rock isn’t necessarily a niche genre.
